So I’ve been thinking lately… I’ve been doing this blogging thing for going on nine years now, and so much has changed in that short time. Back when I started, Twitter was the new kid on the block, while Pinterest and Instagram hadn’t even been dreamed up. Crazy, huh?
Things seemed a lot slower back then. I feel like there was SO much less to worry about when sharing a post with the world. It was less about perfection and less about traffic, more about community and sharing and connection. Most of all I miss the spontaneity of it all. Many times there’s been a small DIY, house project I’ve done, or just general randomness that I’ve wanted to share that ultimately didn’t seem worthy of an entire post.
I know I can share these things on social media, but I also know that a lot of you only follow the blog…
Let’s Hear It For Cacti
However, I realized that that’s actually one thing I can change! So I’ll be occasionally sharing these “Bits & Bites” posts filled with an assortment of things I’ve really been enjoying lately, starting with this lovely cactus that I picked up on a whim last week. You guys know how I love fresh flowers, but I’ve been trying to introduce other plants throughout our house. This little guy currently resides in our entryway, and I walk past him dozens of times each day to get to my home office. He makes me smile every time!
Mandarin Oranges Are In Season
I’m actually a sucker for all kinds of citrus, but I especially love mandarin oranges! When they’re in season, that is. I’ll pass on the shriveled, dried-up, hard-to-peel mandarins that we find the rest of the year…
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to find the sweetest, juiciest, most delicious clementines at Costco lately — 5 pounds for $6.49! Yeah, that’s a lot of mandarin oranges, but we go through them easily in a week. And the extra dose of vitamin C certainly can’t hurt with all of the cold and flu that’s running rampant through the schools here right now.
Balance Bars Are Saving My Butt
I swore off energy bars for breakfast (and that’s still going well!), but I haven’t given them up completely. I still keep a stash of Balance Bars in my car and in my purse, and they’ve saved my butt on more than one occasion… Well, at the very least, they’ve saved me a trip through the drive-thru.
Spring soccer season is already underway, which means most nights I’m on the go from around 5:00pm until 8:30pm or later. Balance Bars are a convenient way to satisfy my hunger until dinnertime (yes, we really do eat that late). They’re also the ideal snack for my almost-13-year-old to eat as she’s changing in the car while we make the dash from soccer to softball on nights when they overlap.
If you haven’t tried their new flavors, they are definitely crave-worthy! My favorite is the Dark Chocolate Turtle, which sounds decadent but is under 200 calories. And my daughter loves the Original Cookie Dough flavor.

More Bits & Bites
- I taught my oldest son how to make a simple pasta with meat sauce, so that takes care of dinner about once a week!
- My husband and I are about 2 weeks into P90X3, and I forgot just how many pushups and pull-ups it entails. We’re skipping the ridiculous diet, but I’m thinking about doing a Whole30 in April. Any tips?
- We’ve been binge-watching The Americans on Prime Video, and I’m seeing the ’80s in a whole new light. Plus the clothing and decor are always good for a laugh!
So what’s new with YOU lately? Tried any amazing new recipes? Tell me something that’s making you happy — doesn’t matter how random!
