My California Wine Club Premier Series Shipment + Giveaway

California Wine Club Review

As much as I enjoy a good bottle of wine, I'm really not all that comfortable with walking into a store and choosing a bottle to take home on my own. The huge selection easily overwhelms me, and I usually have one or more kids nagging me to hurry up, so I end up just quickly grabbing something -- anything. And sometimes it's a winner, but just as often, it's nothing special...

So when the California Wine Club contacted me to ask if I'd be interested in trying their Wine of the Month Club, I was all for it! A few weeks later, a Premier Series package containing two bottles of wine, one red and one white, arrived on my doorstep.

California Wine Club

I received two award-winning vintages from the Ca' Momi Winery located in Napa Valley. Along with every Premier Series delivery, you also receive an issue of Uncorked, which is a complete guide to the current month's selection, detailing the winery itself, as well as specific facts about the wines in your delivery.

I really appreciated that it not only tells me what aromas and palate to expect with each wine, but it also lists what foods they each pair well with and the hold time (the timeframe you should plan to drink the wine within).

California Wine Club Ca' Momi 2010 Napa Valley Rosso di Napa

I enjoy reds and whites equally depending on my given mood, so I was looking forward to trying the Ca' Momi 2010 Napa Valley Rosso di Napa. This particular wine has won numerous gold and silver medals and is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah.

I could definitely detect the hints of plum and raspberry mentioned in the guide. This is a great wine to savor in the evening, but the guide also mentions that it pairs well with pastas and barbecue fare.

I also loved the crisp, citrus notes in the Ca' Momi 2011 Napa Valley Bianco di Napa. The guide states that this blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Muscato pairs well with fish and chicken dishes, but I think it would be perfect to sip on by itself on a hot summer night. Even with the Muscato, this wine is the perfect balance of not overly sweet and being deliciously refreshing.

I learned a lot about the California Wine Club by watching the short video above. I think it's wonderful that the Borings, founders of the California Wine Club, have chosen to focus on small wineries that take a lot of pride in their product. Since small wineries often have very little time and budget for marketing or distribution, it's a total win-win situation.

Bruce Boring talks quite a bit about how he and his wife select the wines to ship to their members. Using a 20-point system, they're always looking for the best possible wines that they can find. They evaluate each wine in a neutral area, away from the influence or expectations of the producers, and asses the aroma, color, and initial taste and feel, among other criteria. Only wines that taste excellent and have a certain wow factor are considered for the club.

As Gerri Becker, Operations Director of the California Wine Club says, "It has nothing to do with what's on the outside of the bottle and everything to do with what's on the inside of it. So it absolutely comes down to taste."
