Let me share a funny little story about Williamsburg, Virginia… About eight years ago, on our way to vacation in The Outer Banks, my husband decided around 3:00am that driving through the night was just not going to happen. We pulled off at the next exit and began hunting for a room. After finding the first three hotels booked to capacity, my husband asked the desk clerk why there were no rooms available. Surprised, the clerk replied, “Sir, you’re in Colonial Williamsburg!”
We laugh about it now, but honestly, neither of us realized just what a popular vacation destination Williamsburg is for families. I mean, we knew about Busch Gardens, but we didn’t realize there were so many family-friendly activities beyond it.
We did eventually find a room, slept for a few hours, and continued on our way. Every year since, we’ve driven that same route for vacation, but we still haven’t made it back to actually visit. And I’m determined to change that this year — it looks like such a charming place to spend a few days.
Christmas In Williamsburg
Though we probably won’t make it to Williamsburg until next summer, if I had a choice, we’d head there right now for Christmas in Williamsburg. Williamsburg is all decked out for the holidays, and it’s brimming with festive activities, shopping, food and more.
Liberty’s Ice Pavilion, through 2/20/17 — spend the day ice skating with the family, and then warm up with a cup of American Heritage hot chocolate or Chowning’s hot cider, while listening to holiday-themed musical performances. Sounds like a perfect family-friendly activity!
Laser Holidays at the Virginia Living Museum, through 12/31/16 — catch a dazzling laser effects program, paired with your favorite holiday music, from classics to modern hits. Most of the shows are in the daytime only, so plan accordingly!
Star of Wonder: Mystery of the Christmas Star, through 12/31/16 — also held at the Virginia Living Museum, you can follow the journey of the Magi around you in their state-of-the-art digital planetarium theater. Two great holiday programs at one destination!
Christmas Town at Busch Gardens, through 2/2/17 — eight million lights light up Busch Gardens in one of the largest light displays in North America. With plenty of holiday food and drinks, holiday shopping and seasonal shows, there’s something for everyone, including a visit with Santa for the youngest family members!
A Colonial Christmas at Jamestown Settlement, through 12/31/16 — experience centuries-old holiday traditions to learn how the season may have been observed in the difficult early years of the Jamestown colony.
Santaland on Main Street in New Town, through 12/18/16 — finish up your holiday shopping in the New Town Shops on Main, and cap off your day with a visit with Santa (Saturdays & Sundays only).
This is just a small selection of the holiday activities you’ll find. There are over 100 ways to light up your holidays in Williamsburg! If you’re considering a trip, I’d recommend checking out the Christmas deals and packages listed here and following the Visit Williamsburg social media accounts below.
