This has been one long, hard, and cold winter this year -- and it's taken its toll on my skin in a big way. Dry and scaly doesn't even begin to cover it, so I decided to whip up a simple DIY body scrub at home to (hopefully) get my skin silky smooth again before spring.
I've been playing around with making my own beauty products at home frequently these days, and I've been more than happy with the results. Not only are they typically cheaper than their store bought alternatives, but by making them myself, I have firsthand quality control over the ingredients that go into them, using organic products where it makes sense and leaving out all of the chemical preservatives that are necessary to keep them shelf stable for long periods of time.
In fact, one of the reasons that I love this homemade body scrub so much is that it only requires TWO ingredients! Of course you can doctor it up with a few others, but in a pinch you just stir together one part of your favorite oil (almond, olive, jojoba, and coconut all work well) with two parts of sea salt or sugar (large or small grain depending on the amount of exfoliation you wish). Who knew it was so simple?
I opted to add a few drops of essential oil to my homemade sugar scrub, choosing a citrusy tangerine that's super uplifting in the shower. But you can choose any you like -- lavender, lemon, lime, etc. You might even consider incorporating a little citrus zest or spices to the mix, or squeeze a couple of vitamin E capsules in.
As much as I was dying to put my DIY body scrub in one of my beautiful Weck jars, I just knew that would be a recipe for disaster. Glass jars + a slippery shower + me would surely end in a trip to the emergency room...
So I was really excited to find these great plastic Better Homes and Gardens Flip-Tite storage containers at Walmart! The ring top flips up for easy removal of the lid, and then you just flip it back down again to seal the container. It's the perfect size for a batch of homemade body scrub, and most importantly, it's shatter resistant.
Another bonus -- these containers are very inexpensive at just $3.97 each AND mine came with a free subscription to Better Homes and Gardens tucked inside. Score!
You may notice the oil settles a little bit after the scrub sits for a bit, but there's an easy fix. Just give it a shake to mix it all together again. I keep my DIY body scrub in the shower at all times and use it near daily!
