If you’ve been following this site for awhile, you may have seen my review of another meal kit delivery service I shared last summer. My overall thoughts? It was okay, but not really worth the price — the portions were too small, the cook times listed in the recipes were inaccurate, and OMG, ALL the packaging…
So when HelloFresh asked if they could send me one of their weekly meal plans for four, I hesitated for a moment before responding with a yes. Ultimately, I decided to give them a try because it’s not fair to write off an entire industry based on my experience with one company. So I decided to give them a shot with an open mind, and I have to say I’m SO glad that I did! From top to bottom, my experience with HelloFresh was leaps and bounds better.
What’s In The HelloFresh Box?
I’ll start with the packaging… The first thing I noticed when opening my HelloFresh box was that they use FAR less packaging to ship their ingredients. All of the shipping components are recyclable, and they even provide instructions for breaking everything down on their website.
Even better, the ingredients for each meal were bagged together in brown paper packaging. Well, except the meat — the meat is placed directly on the ice packs in the bottom of the box, separated by a piece of cardboard. I almost didn’t see it, so be aware that it’s there. Although the cardboard does state that the meat is located under it, I totally overlooked it at first…
The only ingredients you might need to have on hand are olive oil or butter, perhaps a little sugar, and some salt and pepper. Everything else is included in the ingredients you’re shipped — even the milk in the case of one of the recipes we tried!
HelloFresh Meal Options
I opted for the Classic Plan for four people, which provides ingredients for three meals. No, this isn’t enough to feed my entire family of seven, but my younger three kids are often gone at dinnertime, so I scheduled trying out the meals on nights when I knew they wouldn’t be around. Side note: I do wish that meal prep companies would add a large family choice to their offerings, but as of yet, I have not found any that offer this option.
The recipes that HelloFresh sent were very similar to what I would normally cook for dinner — not too aspirational, just good, simple food that I could get on the table in a hurry. So I have to give them big bonus points in that aspect! Here’s what I received:
- Chicken Cheddar Fajitas with Bell Pepper, Lime Crema, and Pickled Jalapeño
- Cherry Balsamic Pork with Thyme Roasted Potatoes and Broccoli
- French Onion Burgers with Béchamel Sauce and Kale Chips
Of the three, my favorite was the Cherry Balsamic Pork, though my husband and boys preferred the Fajitas. We were all in agreement that the French Onion Burgers were our least favorite, and they also happened to be the most fussy and time-consuming to prepare. The recipe timing was pretty spot on overall, and wow, the portions were perfect. Not once did I feel like I needed to add a side salad or some fresh fruit to round out one of the meals — and that’s saying a lot with my husband and two teenage boys testing these recipes with me!
My Overall Thoughts on HelloFresh
Though slightly more expensive than the service I tried previously, I’d definitely choose HelloFresh were I to order from a meal kit delivery service again. I feel like the price is a little more than I’d normally pay at the grocery store, but the convenience is priceless.
While it’s not a good fit for my large family to order regularly, I can definitely see myself placing an order if I know I have an upcoming jam-packed week. This box happened to show up the week before Thanksgiving when I was out-of-my-mind busy, and it was such a relief to pull these meal kits out of the fridge and have dinner ready in well under an hour.
