Igloo Portable Countertop Ice Maker Review | My Entertaining Sanity Saver

In the market for a portable ice maker for camping or entertaining? Today I’m sharing my honest thoughts in this Igloo portable ice maker review. Spoiler: it’s a total entertaining sanity saver!

When we moved into our house three years ago, we invested in all new kitchen appliances. Though I researched them thoroughly before making the purchase, we have been less than thrilled with their performance (and that’s putting it politely). The microwave died over a year ago (and has yet to be replaced), the dishwasher often leaves more dirty dishes than clean, and the gas stovetop sputters while in use, even after numerous attempts to adjust it.

Even with all of that, I think the refrigerator is what we’re least happy with. It’s beautiful, big, and spacious, but that additional space came with a host of other problems. The water dispenser is poorly designed — often more water ends up on the floor than in the glass.

But worst of all, the highly touted slim in-door ice maker holds a measly 6-8 glasses of ice at a time. Think about what this means for a family of 7 that drinks a LOT of ice water… Yep, more often than not, that ice dispenser is empty, and it never catches up enough for us to fill the separate bin in the ice drawer, as the maximum output in ideal conditions is just 182 cubes in a 24-hour period. WHAT?!?!

As you can imagine, this becomes even more problematic when we’re entertaining guests for the holidays and beyond. We prep for guests by stuffing our garage freezer full of bags of ice, which is neither convenient nor practical.

My Honest Igloo Portable Ice Maker Review

So when I spied this Igloo Portable Ice Maker, it was like angels singing! It was on rollback for $99 (and it’s even less now!), and I’m telling you, it’s going to be worth its weight in gold over this holiday season alone.

Fully automatic, you just plug the portable ice maker into an outlet, add water, and press the ON button. Depending on the size of the ice you select (small or large), it will produce 9 ice cubes every 8-13 minutes — meaning it can produce as much ice as my refrigerator ice maker can in an entire DAY in just over 2.5 hours… What?!?!

My portable ice maker is, hands down, my new favorite appliance. Hopefully at some point we’ll be able to replace our refrigerator with a model that better suits our family’s needs, but until then, this portable ice maker is going make entertaining family and friends a heck of a lot simpler — and it means our family can enjoy ice water at will. Plus I just love that the festive red color is perfect for all holidays!

Do you know someone that could use a portable ice maker? The Igloo portable ice maker would make a fantastic gift, as well!

I have one and it's a love hate relationship. Mine is the Igloo 117-SS and yeah, it makes ice and it's awesome.

Until you look inside and realize the little tray that holds the water up on the rods is getting scummy, and there's no frikkin way you can get it out of the unit for a scrub. Also no way our fingers can weave between the rods with a rag to scrub it out. The manual says to clean it with a rag... fails to mention how I'm supposed to do that with fingers larger than pipe cleaners.

SO, every so often we get a rabbit bottle brush and cram it between the rods and twist and spin it hoping to get all the muck out of the tray.

Next time I'm buying one that can be fully disassembled for cleaning because this is nonsense.

I do have this same complaint, Jessica! I spray it out as best I can, but it's not ideal. My dad has the same model and hasn't had any issues -- but he doesn't use his nearly as much, and he leaves the lid cracked so it can dry out completely when he's not using it. Unfortunately, we don't have that luxury, because our's running almost constantly.

I also have an igloo portable ice maker we got at Sam's club about 2 to 3 years ago. We use it in our RV. It produces enough ice for us on a daily basis. It is in use all the time. I take it out of its spot (where I keep it permanently parked) about every 3 months for a good cleaning. Or when you start seeing crap in the bottom of the water reservoir. We only use bottled water in it. It takes exactly 1.5 Liters of water when the low water light comes on. The exact same amount of water our 2.0 coffee maker takes in its reservoir, so we by 2.5 ltr bottles a case at a time. Every once in awhile it stops producing ice, when I feel by the fan and it feels hot I just turn it off for a couple hours to cool, when I turn it back on, it runs like new agian. Great addition to our RV.

Still love mine, too! We finally had to replace it a couple of months ago, and I bought the exact same model in blue this time.

I have one of your ice makers, I have had it for barely a year and now wont work. The power light comes on and that is it. I am debating on throwing it away and buying another. When it works it is awesome. I am so thinking it is something simple to fix. Got any ideas????

My first one had that problem. I brought it back to Sam's Club and they allowed me to exchange it for a new one. If I were you I would bring it back to the store where you bought it and the worst they can say is no.

Wow, that's a bummer, Karen! Did you buy it in a physical store? If so, I'd just take it back there and ask them to replace it. If you bought it from Amazon, try contacting their customer service. They're always been supremely helpful when I've had issues with items. Hope you get it resolved!
