Materials

  • 1 1/2 cups baking soda
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons liquid dish soap (or castile soap)
  • 2 lemons, zested and juiced
  • 20 drops lemon essential oil (optional)

Tools

  • large glass mixing bowl
  • fork
  • airtight container

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the baking soda and salt. Stir with a fork to remove any lumps.
  2. Add the liquid dish soap to the mixture, along with the zest of both lemons and stir well. You can also add the lemon essential oil in this step if desired.
  3. Add the fresh lemon juice to the mixture, stirring as you add until the mixture reaches a slushy consistency. It should take around 1/4 to 1/2 cup of juice to reach this stage.
  4. Portion out the mixture into tablespoon-sized tabs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Allow the tabs to dry for at least 24 hours before using.
  5. Store in a sealed container and use as need to freshen up your garbage disposal. Run the garbage disposal with a handful of ice. Then add one of the tabs, let it sit for a few minutes, then run the disposal again.
