Having a daily kitchen cleaning routine is key to making our mornings run smoothly. It’s easy to start the day off with a smile when you walk into a sparkling clean kitchen!
I used to believe there were two kinds of people: the ones who always have clean kitchens… and the rest of us. You know, the moms who always seem to have sparkling countertops and no dishes piled up in the sink? I can proudly say that I’m one of those people now (well, most days) thanks to a few helpful habits I’ve picked up.
By making these steps a part of my daily routine, my kitchen stays clean with minimal effort. AND this mom gets to maintain a fraction of her sanity… Because trying to cook dinner in the midst of a pile of clutter nearly pushes me off the deep end!
My Daily Kitchen Cleaning Routine
I feel like the kitchen is the easiest room in the house to let slide. Skip a day or even two (shudder) and suddenly you’re overwhelmed with piles of dirty dishes (where did my sink go?!), sticky spills, and crumbs everywhere. So I’d say the real key to any daily kitchen cleaning routine is consistency.
There are many, many nights when we don’t sit down to dinner until 8:30pm. I can tell you the last thing I want to do at that point is clean up the kitchen. But I just keep repeating to myself, “It’s only 15 minutes. It’s only 15 minutes.” And I can honestly say that there’s never been a morning when I’ve walked into my bright, shiny kitchen and thought, “I wish I would have gone to bed 15 minutes earlier instead of straightening up last night…”
A clean kitchen allows me to start my morning off with a smile! Here’s what my daily kitchen cleaning routine looks like in action:
Keep countertops clear
Clutter loovvveeees company. If I set my purse down on the counter, the mail and my kids’ backpacks quickly join the party. That’s why I’ve instituted a “nothing-on-the-counters” rule in my house. Even our toaster gets hidden away when it’s not in use. Although, to be honest, it’s currently being held together by duct tape… So I wouldn’t want it sitting out anyhow! #keepinitreal
Wipe everything down
With the countertops clear, I’m much more likely to wipe everything down instead of ignoring the crumbs in the corner. My walnut scrubber sponges from Grove are perfect for wiping up water, spills, sticky spots — you name it. Every time I cook, I grab my walnut scrubber and give the stove, sink, and countertops a quick wipe with the soft side. The scour side (made from crushed walnuts, how cool is that?!) is non-abrasive and tough on burnt-on messes. Once you see how shiny and fresh your kitchen looks, you’ll be motivated to keep it clean!
Load and run the dishwasher
In our home, our larger than average family usually requires two loads of dishes per day, especially if I’m working on developing a recipe. We typically run it after school when the snacks are done and again after dinner. Most families can probably get away with just the after dinner load (and know that I’m totally jealous of you).
Every morning while I’m making coffee, I empty the dishwasher, and my kids are responsible for the before dinner emptying. We’ve mostly trained ourselves to put glasses straight in the dishwasher instead of letting them pile up in the sink. And I usually take a few extra seconds to hand-wash any items that don’t fit in a load and dry them with my favorite Grove kitchen towel. It looks so much nicer than leaving them in the sink or sitting in the drying rack! This towel is super absorbent and beautiful, and I’ve slowly been building up my collection by ordering one each month.
Bonus: Use beautiful cleaning supplies
I know it sounds silly, but I’m waayyy more motivated to clean and do dishes if I have nice supplies that I look forward to using — like those gorgeous dish towels… And also Mrs. Meyer’s hand soaps and dish soaps! They’re made with essential oils and plant-derived ingredients, so they smell amazing and don’t irritate my skin. Plus, the matching set looks so nice sitting next to my sink!
Now that these steps are part of my everyday routine, it only takes a few minutes and saves me tons of time in the long run — promise!
