Do you suffer from allergies or just have excessive dust in your home? Having your air ducts cleaned can help reduce the amount of dust circulated and increase the efficiency of your heating and cooling systems! Today I’m sharing my honest experience in this Stanley Steemer duct cleaning review.

Dust, mold, and cigarette smoke. These are the allergies I was diagnosed with at age 5 after enduring one of those brutal skin prick tests across my entire back. NBD in the grand scheme of things versus, say, a peanut allergy… But to my 5-year-old self it was devastating.
Mold and cigarette smoke are fairly easy to control — that is IF your parents are willing to quit smoking (this was the ’80s after all). But dust, that’s another story, especially when you live in a drafty old home. It meant selling off my beautiful pink canopy bed, along with all of the beloved stuffed animals that I surrounded myself with at bedtime every night. It also meant weekly allergy shots that were both painful and annoying.
Many people outgrow their allergies as they get older, and this has been true for me, as well — to an extent. Mold doesn’t seem to be a trigger (although to be fair, I’m not often around it). And while I cannot stand the odor of cigarette smoke, it doesn’t induce a sneezing fit these days.
But I still have to be vigilant about dust, and our house is particularly dusty. Like I need to dust and vacuum nearly daily, dusty… Add in a Weimaraner that sheds far more than we expected, and it often feels like we’re fighting a losing battle.
A Clean Home Is A Healthy Home
After doing some research on reducing excessive dust in a house, and finding the same tips on nearly every site (dust and vacuum often, change your furnace filter frequently, etc.), I stumbled across one article that recommended having your air ducts cleaned. I didn’t even know this was a thing!
I mentioned it to my husband, who also suffers from seasonal allergies, and he thought it might be helpful, as well. But ultimately, we decided not to act on it at that time because of our busy winter schedule.
As luck would have it, I received an email from Stanley Steemer a few weeks ago asking if I’d be interested in trying one of their services and sharing my thoughts here on Unsophisticook.
I’m most familiar with Stanley Steemer as a carpet cleaning company, and goodness was our carpet ever in need of a cleaning… But when I navigated to their site to schedule our service (online scheduling = ultra convenient), I was surprised to see that they offer air duct cleaning! It seemed like kismet, so I scheduled a cleaning right away.
Air Duct Cleaning What To Expect
Having never experienced an air duct cleaning, I didn’t know what to expect. It was actually quite a fascinating process, for both myself and my kids.
A large Stanley Steemer truck pulls up to your house, that’s basically a giant vacuum cleaner. I later learned that these trucks are manufactured right here in the Columbus, Ohio area and are then driven to all the Stanley Steemer company-owned and franchise locations across the U.S. Even as far as Alaska!
The crew starts by cutting two holes into the furnace, one on the blower side and one on the return side. Then a giant vacuum hose is hooked up to the furnace from the truck sitting outside.
Oh, and about those holes — don’t worry, they patch them up very neatly when they’re finished. Plus they can be reused again in the future (cleanings are recommended every 3-5 years).
Starting on the top floor, all of the air vents and return vents are taped off. Then the air vents are opened up one by one, and all of the dirt and dust on the cover and inside is blown off and down through the vent.
The crew continues working their way around from the top down, forcing all of the debris toward the furnace, where it is vacuumed out to the truck. Once all of the air vents are completed, the crew goes back to the top floor and repeats the process for all of the return vents.
What’s In Your Air Ducts?
A few years ago, one of my boys reached way into the air duct in his room and pulled out the foulest Dora sippy cup you have ever seen. We were well beyond sippy cups by the time we moved in here, so I shuddered to see what the workers might discover lurking within our air ducts.
Lighter dust and dirt are easily directed toward the furnace and out toward the truck, but the heavier debris requires smaller holes to be cut along the main duct in the basement. This allows the crew to continue to force all of the dust and dirt toward the furnace and to retrieve any heavier pieces that settle.
In our case, I’m told this was mainly drywall pieces, along with some candy and beads, which I’m guessing are leftover from my girls’ slime making adventures. But at one point a crewmember walked up with a dusty pack of cigarettes that were retrieved from the debris — probably lost by one of the construction workers that built our house 12 years ago.
Air Duct Cleaning Review
All told, the air duct cleaning process took about 2.5 hours from start to finish. And I can honestly say I’ve noticed an immediate reduction in the amount of dust that settles on shelves and such throughout the house.
I’m told that it’s not uncommon to see a 30-40% increase in heating and cooling efficiency, as well — especially if the ducts in a home have never been cleaned previously. Even if I didn’t have allergies, I’d say this service is well worth scheduling!
Clean Carpet Too!
While we were at it, we went ahead and had our carpet cleaned at the same time. Though different crews do air duct cleaning and carpet cleaning, it was easy to schedule both services online.
Did you know that the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America recommends your carpet be cleaned 3-4 times a year by a Certified professional? Stanley Steemer’s asthma & allergy friendly® Carpet Cleaning service removes an average of 94% of common household allergens from carpet, making this a great addition to getting our air ducts cleaned.
Overall, Stanley Steemer did a fabulous job, and I truly appreciated the level of care the crew took in our home. The workers were very courteous and more than willing to answer all of the questions I asked throughout the process.
Is your home in need of a summer cleaning, too? From carpets, tile & grout, air ducts, and more, Stanley Steemer has you covered with easy ways to freshen up your space!
